A set of beliefs about the meaning of life- why
do we exist?
 A set of customs and practices that relate to
the worship of God (or several gods).
 An organization, such as a church or place of
worship, which oversees the conduct or
religious practices
 Most religions designate some special places
as sacred or holy


Monotheistic- the belief in one god
 Polytheistic- the belief in many gods
 Animistic- the belief that many things in nature
have their own spirit. (one of the earliest forms
of religion.)


3rd Religion from SW Asia, Middle East.
 Founder – Muhammad
 Widely known as Muslims
 Followers worship God, who is called Allah.
Holy book is the Koran, Qu’ran.
 Believe in the five pillars of faith: Faith,
Prayer, Charity, Fasting, and Pilgrimage.

HINDUISM
One of the world’s oldest religions.
 Based on the caste system- a fixed social
system with specific rites and duties
 Polytheistic
 Hindu’s believe the principles of life can be
discovered through meditation.
 Dates back nearly 5,000 years.
 Concentrated in India
 Has No Single Holy Book.
 Reincarnation

BUDDHISM
Rejected the caste system of Hinduism

suffering was caused by human desire. Sought
to end suffering by blocking out selfish desires.


Israel, 40% of the Jewish population live

 Belief in the ten commandments.

SIKHISM
Originated near present day Pakistan, northern
India.
 Founded based off the teachings of Guru
Nanak Dev Ji.
 Monotheistic religion.
 5th largest organized religion in the world, and
fastest growing.
 Reincarnation
 Everyone has equal status in God’s eyes
 Men wear Turbans.

