Magnetism and Electricity
INV 1 I-Check Review
-Magnets will push and pull each other even though a
material is in between them (think about the desk with a
magnet on each side and how you were able to move the one
on top).
-Opposite poles of magnets attract, so North attracts to
South. South and South will repel and North and North
will repel. Be prepared to tell which pole of the magnet is
facing which if they are stacked on a pencil and explain
(like poles with repel, unlike poles will attract).
-When a steel or iron object touches a magnet, it becomes a
temporary magnet. Only other iron or steel objects will
then stick to that object. Think about your response sheetthe paper clip stuck to the iron nail because the nail was
touching a magnet. If you tried to pick up the copper square
from the test kit, it would not work.
-You can test to see if an object is made of iron by testing
the object with a magnet. You will know it is made of iron
if it sticks to the magnet.
-When iron filings come into contact with a magnet, the line
up with the magnetic field (or force) of the magnet.
-We used spacers in class to increase the distance between
magnets in the cup and the magnet on the base. The force
of attraction between the magnets weakens as the distance
increases.
-Magnets can be used to sort iron or steel objects from
objects that are made of other metals, like aluminum.
-An observation is something that you MUST witness or
observe. It cannot be a guess or assumption.
EXAMPLE: The object stuck to the filing cabinet.
(observation)
NON EXAMPLE: The object would break if it were freezing
cold. (assumption)
