Looking at number lines can help us
to understand negative numbers.
Lower numbers are on
the left and higher
numbers are on the right.
5 is higher than -7
-1 is higher than -9
Is -8 higher or lower than 7?
Is 14 higher or lower than -15?
We use negative
numbers in many
different ways.
The temperature
is -7oC.
It’s VERY cold!
The coordinates of the
green circle are (-6, 4).
My bank balance is -£100.
I owe the bank 100 pounds!
Level -3 is three
floors below
ground floor.
When you are solving negative number problems
with a calculator, look for the +/- key.
Let’s work out -5 + 7
using a calculator.
Press these buttons…
+/- 5
+
7
=
This tells the calculator to
make the next number that
you enter negative.
The answer is 2.
