Chapter 7 American History- Era of Imperialism and the Spanish-American War
Objectives
Students will identify and describe reasons why the U.S. was Isolationist in its first century.
Students will identify and describe reasons why the U.S. became more imperialistic after its first
century.
Students will explain the ideologies that contributed to U.S. Imperialism, and understand that
not all Americans agreed with imperialistic tendencies.
Students will summarize the territorial gains of the United States through annexation,
purchases, and war in the last half of the 1800’s.
Students will clarify the reasons for the U.S. becoming involved in the Philippines in the
Spanish-American War, and conflicts we faced there after the war.
Students will summarize the impact of yellow journalism on public opinion prior to the SpanishAmerican War.
Students will describe the difficulty in gaining territory to build the Panama Canal, and why the
Canal was important.
Students will summarize how the United States used diplomacy to expand its power in Asia, the
Caribbean and Latin America during the Presidential administrations of McKinley, Theodore
Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson. & TAFT.
Students will recognize the impact of U.S. involvement in Mexico. (i.e. Poncho Villa raids).
Students will relate imperialism of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s to the role of the United
States around the world today.
