TWO RADICAL EXPRESSIONS
To solve an equation with two radical expressions, rewrite
the equation so that each side has one radical.
EXAMPLE:

EXTRANEOUS SOLUTIONS
• If you square both sides of , you get x = .
But, x = 1 is not a valid solution.
• This is an example of an "extraneous" solution. These
often occur when solving these types of problems.

"REAL­LIFE EXAMPLE"
The Beaufort wind scale was devised to measure wind speed.
The Beaufort numbers B, which range from 0 to 12, can be
modeled by:
where s is the speed (in miles per hour) of the wind. Find the
wind speed that corresponds to the Beaufort number B = 11.
