What is WPW?
 It was discovered in 1930 by Dr. Harold
Wolff, Dr. Paul Dudley, & Sir John
Parkinson. Hence the name Wolff
Parkinson White Syndrome.
 WPW is a condition that if any part or all
of the ventricular muscle is activated be
the impulse originating from the atrium.
About WPW
 Otherwise known as pre-excitation
syndrome, WPW is characterized with
episodes of tachycardia (supraventricular
tachycardia in 80% of cases).
 Someone with WPW may start having
these episodes at anytime, infancy or
adulthood. In females they can start in
pregnancy.
WPW Continued
 It occurs more often in males than females.
Even so it occurs in females about 46%.
 WPW has 2 types
Type A premature activation occurs in
the left ventricle
Type B premature activation occurs in
the right ventricle.
*Some people diagnosed with WPW has neither Type A nor Type B
Treatment Options
 Some Cardiologists opt for drug therapy & use such
drugs as Digitalis & related ones. This treatment would
be most beneficial for mild to moderate WPW.
 Open-Heart surgery is another option. This used to be
very popular thought to be the only way to correct
WPW.
 Radio Wave Ablation is the most popular and efficient
way to treat WPW. Using a catheter, Drs ablate the bad
pathway causing the WPW.
*Sudden Death may occur in severe cases of WPW
