The aim of our research is to study the peculiarities of Wolf-Parkinson-White
syndrome in children at the present stage.
Materials and methods. We have performed retrospective analyses of 71 in-patient
cards of 39 children with WPW on the basis of Regional children cardiac center of
Kharkiv (from January 2010 to December 2012). The children were divided into groups on
the grounds of physical development, the age at which a diagnosis was made, presence of
attacks of paroxysmal tachycardia and the small anomalies of the heart.
Examination: anthropometry, ECG, Holter ECG. Processing of results was carried
out by Microsoft Office Excel 2007 and Statics 6.0.
Results and Conclusions. Among 39 patients there were 27 males (69%) and 12
females (31%). Average age – 10,42 ± 5,74. WPW Syndrome, paroxysmal
supraventricular tachycardia was detected in 14 patients (36%), WPW phenomenon – in
25 patients (64%).The typical complaint as palpitations were noted only by 34% of
patients. Syndrome/phenomenon WPW is often recorded in the age group from 12 to 17
years (33%) in combination with a small anomaly of the heart (85%), mainly abnormal
notochord (72%). As for ECG signs of WPW an extension of the QRS complex was
detected in 100%, shortening of the interval PQ – in 84% and Δ-wave – in 67%. The
attack of paroxysmal tachycardia was detected in 14 patients (36%), more frequently in
children with disharmonious development (R = + 0,99, p < 0,05).
