EXPERIMENT : EFFECT OF BLADE TYPE ON THE OUTPUT POWER OF HORIZONTAL AXIS WIND TURBINE OBJECTIVE : 1. To measure the output power of a Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine with different types of blades. 2. To determine the relationship between output power and blade type of a Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine. DISCUSSION Since the wind turbine have developed for a long time, different type came into use for a blades of the Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine. Your GES-200 Wind Energy Module contains three type blades: Dutch, Sail and Tapered blades. The experiment is used to determine the effect of the type pf the blades on the output power of the Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine. The experiment attempts to obtain the result from the comparision of measured data of three different blade type,so it is important to carefully keep the settings such as number of blades, tilt angle and wind speed constant at all times. PROCEDURE 1. Connect the barrel connector of the AC Power Adapter to DC 15V jack on the GES-23001 Wind Energy Module. Using the Mode and Select buttons, set DMM1 for Ω measurement. Connect DMM1 “V/Ω” terminal to TP3 and DMM1 “COM1” terminal to TP5. Adjust the load resistor VR1 for 50Ω on DMM1 display. 2. Connect DMM1 “V/Ω” to terminal TP3 and DMM1 “COM1” to TP4. Connect DMM2 “µA/mA” terminal toTP5 and DMM2 “COM2” to TP6. Connect GES-28003 Generator “+” terminal to TP1 and GES-28003 Generator “-“ terminal to TP2. See Fig.3-1. Using Mode and Select buttons, set DMM1 and DMM2 for DCV and DcmA measurement, respectively. 1 2 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Using the Anemometer, set the wind speed of the Blower to 7m/s. Place the Wind Screen between Blower and Anemometer. Remove the Anemometer. Install 2 Dutch Blades on the Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine. Adjust the tilt angle of blades to 45° using the Angle Calibrator. Place the Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine on the Baseplate as shown in Fig.3-2. This places the blades of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine vertical to the air outlet of the Blower. 8. Remove the Wind Screen. 9. Measure and record the voltage on DMM1 display and the current on DMM2 display in the table 3-1. Calculate and record the power using Power=VoltageXCurrent. 10. Repeat step 5 to 9 for 2 tapered blades. 11. Repeat step 5 to9 for 2 sail bladeas. 3 Table 3-1 Measured voltages and currents and calculated powers Type of blades Voltage (V) Current (mA) Power (mW) Dutch Tapered Sail QUESTION 1. Compare the result of Dutch Blades and Sail Blades. Which type of blades delivers a higher power? 2. Compare the result of tapered blades and sail blades. Which type of blades delivers a higher power? 4
