Electrical conduction
The ability to conduct electrical current or conductivity is a property of the substances that is very easy to
observe. Some substances do conduct electrical current and some don’t, that depends on their chemical
structure. Lets try it!
What we need
•
•
•
•
•
1 battery (voltage must be set in 1,5V to avoid damage to the LEDs)
3 crocodile wires
1 LED
1 plastic bowl
Samples of chemical substances: a piece of wire (copper or other metal), table salt (NaCl), sugar, distilled water.
Procedure
Connect the circuit as shown in the picture.
Light the LED by connecting the battery to a power source.
Break the circuit and connect it back, introducing (one at a time): the wire, a pile of salt, a pile of sugar,
distilled water, salt solution, sugar solution, then reconect and observe.
