The Small and Large
Intestines
Essential components of the
digestive system
**Please take notes in your notebook**
The Small Intestine
The Small Intestine



Found between the
stomach and large
intestine
Average length is 21-25
feet long
Divided (by function)
into three sections:



Duodenum
Jejunum
Ileum
What is the main job of the Small Intestine?

Job of the small
intestine:



Absorbs and transfers
digested food particles
into the blood stream
Digested food particles
must be transported
throughout the body to
reach all cells
This means that
nutrients travel from
the digestive system to
the circulatory system
Small Intestines contain VILLI


The small intestines
contain villi
Villi


Small finger-like
projections in the lining
of the intestine
Increase the surface
area of the small
intestine, allowing for
more absorption of food

The small intestine, if
stretched out, would
cover the area of a
tennis court!

intestine the blood


Nutrients from the
digested food move
from the inside of the
small intestine, through
the walls of the villi, and
into the bloodstream.
Once in the blood, food
particles travel all over
the body to cells that
need these small
molecules as building
blocks.
The Large Intestine
The Large Intestine (aka: Colon)



Found between the
small intestine and
rectum
Approximately 4-5
feet long
Divided into four
sections:




Ascending
Transverse
Descending
Sigmoid
What is the main job of the Large
Intestine?




The main job of the large
intestine:
 To remove water from
digested food (reabsorb
water back into the body).
It’s like a sponge for water!
Any food particles that haven’t
been absorbed pass through
the large intestine and become
solid waste (feces).
The reabsorbed water will be
filtered by the kidneys and
excreted as liquid waste.
