 5th Grade Social Studies I CAN STATEMENTS Chapter 1 I can understand the Geography of the United States. Chapter 2 I can understand the first people to live in North America. Chapter 3 I can analyze Native American Cultural Regions of the area now known as the United States. Chapter 4 I can explain why Europeans left for the new world. Chapter 5 I can use case studies of individual explorers and stories of life in Europe to analyze explorers personal backgrounds, sponsoring countries, motives for exploration, timeline of exploration, routes they took, and the impact they had on the Native Peoples. Chapter 6 I can examine the 3 Early English Settlements of Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth looking at the hardships each of them faced. Chapter 7 I can compare the regional settlement patterns of the Southern, New England, and the Middle Colonies. Chapter 8 I can describe the dilemmas faced by enslaved Africans including: European Slave Trade in West Africa, The Middle passage, and the Arrival in America. Chapter 9 I can describe what life was like in the colonies for both white colonists and African American slaves. Chapter 10 I can describe the growing tensions between the Colonies and Great Britton during the 1700’s. Chapter 11 I can analyze the Colonists arguments for and against independence from Britain.
