STAGE 4 SKWIRK Brainiacs! Unit Topic Chapter Science 1. History of Science 3. Science and the Future 1. Science and Human Health PENECILLIN - The Greatest Accident Antibiotics are a very important part of medicine today. Previously you would have read a bit about it in the SKWIRK online content, specifically Penicillin. Now we will learn a bit more about how by an amazing accident penicillin was discovered. Instructions: Read through the following passage and fill in the cloze passage and answer the questions below. Have a Go! mould return nasal mucus scientist harmful infection fighting diseases contaminated synthetically recognized medicine antibacterial Penicillin is possibly the world most well known ___________. It was the first antibiotic (a substance which stops the growth of ___________ bacteria) and how it was discovered was quite a stroke of luck. In 1928 a young Scottish ___________ by the name of Alexander Fleming was doing some research in to his own nasal mucus. Fleming thought that ________ _________ might have some antibacterial effect; in his research he accidentally left a culture plate (a dish scientists use to grow bacteria) out with some Stapylococus bacteria on it while he went on a holiday for two weeks. On his ___________ he found that the plate apart for being cover is bacteria had also grown a large green/yellow _________, but in a circle around the mould there were no bacteria. Unknown to Fleming, a spore of Penicillin notatum had __________________ his culture plate. Seeing that the mould had stopped the bacteria growing around it Fleming quickly realized that the mould must have some ________________ quality. After more tests Fleming deduced that the moulds active ingredient, which was name Penicillin, was a strong ___________ __________ properties. Today Penicillin is created ________________ by pharmaceutical companies but is still _____________ at the world’s most life saving drug that enabled medicine to be become what it is today. It was and is used to treat such ____________ as: tonsillitis, gangrene, meningitis, tuberculosis and many more Keywords: antibiotic, Penicillin, bacteria, mould, antibacterial. © 2010-2011 SKWIRK / Red Apple Education Pty Ltd SKWIRK Brainiacs!
