You are an explorer who has arrived in a strange land. You are discovering many new and exciting things. It is your job to communicate these things to the people back home. You are going to produce an information pack detailing your finds. There is a task for every day of the three weeks. You can complete them in any order but they all must be handed in at the end. Use the success criteria grid to help you reach your target level. What is inside the cell? Night 1 2 3 4 How are cells suited to their jobs? 5 Night 1 2 3 4 5 Tasks Week 1 CORE TASK: Create a poster showing a plant and an animal cell with key labels. EXTENSION TASK: Explain what each part of the plant cell and animal cell does. CORE TASK: Identify the differences between a plant and an animal cell and record these in a table. EXTENSION TASK: Explain why animal and plant cells need to be different. CORE TASK: Draw a picture of a microscope and label it. EXTENSION TASK: Write a detailed set of instructions explaining how to use a light microscope safely. CORE TASK: Write a magazine an article on the history of the microscope. EXTENSION TASK: Name the inventor of the microscope and explain what it is used for. CORE TASK: Compare a light microscope and an electron microscope. You may wish to draw a table. EXTENSION TASK : Draw a time line showing how our ideas of cell structure developed as microscopes have improved. Tasks Week 2 CORE TASK: Research and write about the following types of specialised cells: Red blood cell, white blood cell, sperm cell, egg cell (Ova), nerve cell. EXTENSION TASK: State their scientific name, function and say how they are adapted to suit their job. CORE TASK: Research the following types of specialised cells: Palisade cell, root hair cell, ciliated epithelial cell. EXTENSION TASK: State their scientific name, function and say how they are adapted to do their job. CORE TASK: Pick one of the specialised cells you have researched on night 1 or night 2 and make a 3D model of it. Make sure you label all of the parts. EXTENSION TASK: Make it as detailed as possible. Year 7 science Home learning project What are cells? How do things grow and repair? Night 1 2 3 4 5 Tasks Week 3 CORE TASK: Write a guide on how flowers reproduce. EXTENSION TASK: Include diagrams and use correct scientific terms. CORE TASK: Explain the process of human fertilisation. EXTENSION TASK: Discuss the cells involved and make sure you use the correct scientific terms. CORE TASK: Describe how cells divide in order to multiply. EXTENSION TASK: Discuss how they do this in both sexual and asexual reproduction. CORE TASK: What are stem cells? Research stem cells and their uses. EXTENSION TASK: Say whether you think stem cell research is a good idea or not. Give some reasons. CORE TASK: Should we be allowed to clone things? Write a speech detailing whether you agree or disagree with cloning, give a reason for your choice EXTENSION TASK: Give detailed reasons for your ideas. Teacher assessment N.C Level Assessment Criteria I Can........... Self assessment What are Cells? – Level guide link my work on cells to different areas in science 7 use my knowledge of cells to explain some of the new areas of science such as stem cell transplants, cloning etc. 7 explain how some scientists who have worked on cells have made the world a better place 7 explain how scientific facts can help prove that a theory works 7 WWW: EBI: Year 7 science Home learning project What are cells?
