List 1

2.
3.
Air Pressure – the force of gases pressing down on Earth
Condensation - the changing of a gas to a liquid
Convection
- when heat travels in liquids and gases allowing warm
particles to expand and rise and cool particles to
contract and sink
4. Evaporation - the process of changing a liquid to a gas
5. Exosphere - the uppermost layer of Earth’s atmosphere; extends
into outer space
6. Global Winds – convection regions in Earth’s atmosphere and the
spinning of Earth on its axis cause winds to blow in
prevailing directions around Earth
7. Land Breeze - a breeze coming from the land toward the sea
8. Mesosphere - the third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere that is the
coldest layer and meteoroids burn up
9. Polar Winds - the wind belt where cold, dry, heavy air in both
hemispheres between 50 and 60 latitudes and the
poles causes winds to move air from the poles toward
the west
10. Radiation - the way in which energy, including heat, travels
through empty space; travels in rays or waves
11. Runoff
- the liquid water that drains off of the land’s surface
attempting to move back toward sea level as surface
water flow or groundwater flow
12. Sea Breeze - a breeze coming from the sea toward the land
13. Stratosphere - the second layer of Earth’s atmosphere that extends
from the troposphere; contains the ozone layer
14. Thermosphere – the fourth layer of the Earth’s atmosphere that is
the thickest and hottest
15. Trade Winds - the wind belt above the equator blowing in a steady
northeast direction
16. Transpiration - when plants release water vapor into the air
17. Troposphere - the layer of the atmosphere closet to the Earth; all
weather occurs here
18. Water Cycle - the continuous process of water evaporating, becoming
cooled and condensing, and then returning to the Earth
in the form of precipitation
19. Westerly Winds – the prevailing wind belt over much of the middle and
higher altitudes where the winds blow generally from
the west toward the east; affects our weather
20. Wind – the horizontal movement of air from a high pressure area to a
low pressure area.
