The AOTF Eleanor Clarke Slagle Society
The Eleanor Clarke Slagle Society of the American Occupational Therapy Foundation celebrates the
legacy of outstanding philanthropy that benefits occupational therapy and the communities we serve.
Eleanor Clarke Slagle was one of the founders of the American Occupational Therapy Association.
Originally a social worker, Slagle became interested in the new field of occupational therapy and in 1917,
she conducted training courses at Hull House in Chicago. From 1918-1922, Slagle directed research in
occupational therapy for the state of Illinois and then organized a therapy program for the state’s
psychiatric hospitals. She was named director of occupational therapy for the state of New York in 1922,
a post she held until her death in 1942. Slagle demonstrated the first large-scale occupational therapy
program for a state hospital system and founded an annual training institute that became a model for
similar programs throughout the United States.
We invite you to join the AOTF Eleanor Clarke Slagle Society
The American Occupational Therapy Foundation (AOTF) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1965.
Fulfilling our mission - to advance research, education, and leadership in the field of occupational therapy
and raise public awareness of the importance of enabling individuals to participate fully in life, regardless
of their physical, social, mental, or developmental circumstances – depends so much on your generosity.
Membership in the Eleanor Clarke Slagle Society is awarded to generous friends through cumulative
giving each year (October 1 – September 30) at the following levels. All members of the Eleanor Clarke
Slagle Society are listed in the AOTF annual report.

AOTF Legacy Circle
Members of the Legacy Circle have created legacies that will be realized in the future through bequests
or by naming AOTF as a beneficiary of a trust, IRA or insurance policy. Their planned gifts strengthen the
Foundation’s efforts on behalf of occupational therapy and the communities we serve for generations to
come. Legacy Circle members receive a handsome lapel pin, certificate and special invitations to
Foundation events; are recognized at the AOTF Booth at the AOTA Annual Conference and are listed in
the annual report.
