Subject: Science
Biology: Health and Lifestyle
In this unit, students learn the importance of a balanced diet and the food groups that contribute
towards this. They also focus on learning the organs associated with the digestive system and the
effects of drugs, alcohol and smoking on the body
Key Performance Indicators
Students will be assessed to see if they:

Can state and explain the components of a healthy diet. To include: carbohydrates; lipids;
proteins; vitamins; minerals; fibre and water.

Can calculate the energy required for a healthy diet.

Can describe the effects of an unbalanced diet. To include; obesity, starvation and
deficiency diseases.

Can state and describe the role of the tissues and organs that form the human digestive
system. Including enzymes as catalysts

Can explain the role of bacteria in the digestive system.

Can explain the process of breathing, including the pressure model and lung volume.

Can explain the process of reproduction. Specifically; label the male and female
reproductive systems, explain the process of birth and the effects of the maternal
lifestyle on the foetus through the placenta, describe the menstrual cycle and define the
terms; gametes, fertilisation, gestation.

Subject: Science
Biology: Ecosystem Processes
This unit focuses on the environment. Students study the process of photosynthesis, and its role in
food chains. They also look at both aerobic and anaerobic respiration and the factors that affect
these rates.
Key Performance Indicators
Students will be assessed to see if they:

Can describe the process of photosynthesis including the production of carbohydrates in
the leaves and gaining minerals, nutrients and water from the soil via the roots.

Can explain the role of stomata in plants.

Can state the word equation for Photosynthesis, including identification of its reactants
and products.

Can explain how leaves are adapted for photosynthesis.

Can describe and explain the processes of aerobic and anaerobic respiration.

Can state the word equation for aerobic respiration.

Can explain the role of an ecosystem. Describe the importance of food webs and insect
pollinated crops in this.

Can explain how organisms are affected by their environment, including how some toxic
materials can build up.

Can plan and carry out Scientific experiments. Specifically; being able to identify
independent, dependent and control variables.

Biology: Adaption and Inheritance
This unit looks at the inheritance; students will investigate how genetic information is passed on and
the likelihood of inheriting certain characteristics. They will also study the processes of evolution and
natural selection along with looking at the importance of adaptation for plants and animals.
Key Performance Indicators
Students will be assessed to see if they:

Can explain how genetic information is passed on from one generation to the next.

Can explain the role of Watson, Crick, Wilkins and Franklin in the discovery of DNA.
Explain the model used to describe the structure of DNA to include; chromosomes and
genes.

Can describe the differences between species.

Can explain the differences between species as either continuous or discontinuous.
Display these in graphical form.

Can understand that some species compete more successfully and therefore survive to
pass on their genetics. Describe this as a mechanism of Natural Selection.

Can understand that some species compete less successfully for resources and therefore
are unable to survive to pass on their genetics. Understand that this is known as
extinction.

Can describe the term biodiversity and the importance of maintaining biodiversity.
Describe the use of gene banks as a mechanism to preserve genetic material.

Can understand how scientific explanations come about, and the importance of peer
review.

Chemistry: The Periodic Table
In this unit, students learn about the different groups and periods in the Periodic Table. They will
study the trends that can be identified within these and be able to give common examples.
Key Performance Indicators
Students will be assessed to see if they:

Can state the word and formula equation for simple chemical reactions.

Can explain that reactions with acids and metals produce a salt and hydrogen gas.

Can explain that an acid and an alkali produce a salt plus water.

Can describe the various physical and chemical properties of different elements.

Can state the properties of metals and non-metals.

Can state the properties of metal and non-metal oxides and relate to their acidity.

Can state the order of reactivity including carbon.

Can evaluate data and identify random and systematic error.

This unit focuses on mixtures and the techniques that can be used to separate these mixtures. This
includes processes such as distillation, evaporation and chromatography.

Students will be assessed to see if they:

Can describe the differences between atoms, elements and compounds.

Can state the chemical symbols and formulae for elements and compounds.

Can explain what the term mixture means and the process of dissolving.

Can explain how certain substances can be separated, using the following techniques;
Filtration, Evaporation, Distillation and Chromatography.

Can present results in the form of tables and graphs

Can identify patterns in data to draw conclusions

Chemistry: Metals and Acids
In this unit, students will learn about the reaction that occurs when you add a Metal to an acid. From
this they should be able to write common word equations. They will also look at displacement
reactions and finally focus on polymers, ceramics and composites.
Key Performance Indicators
Students will be assessed to see if they:

Can explain the terms; combustion, thermal decomposition, oxidation and displacement.

Can explain how Carbon can be used to obtain metals from metal oxides.

Can describe the properties of ceramics, polymers and composites.

Can use appropriate Maths skills to calculate results.

This unit focuses on the structure of the Earth and the atmosphere. They learn about the rock cycle
and carbon cycle. They also focus on the importance of recycling and the effects of climate change
on the Earth.
Key Performance Indicators
Students will be assessed to see if they:

Can state the composition of the Earth

Can describe the structure of the Earth.

Can describe the rock cycle including the formation of igneous, sedimentary and
metamorphic rocks.

Can describe the Earth as a source of limited resources and the importance of recycling.

Can describe and explain the carbon Cycle.

Can state the composition of the atmosphere.

Can describe the role of human activity in carbon dioxide production and its impact on
climate.

Physics: Electricity and Magnetism
In this unit, students learn about electricity and the two different types of circuit that an electric
current can flow through. They also spend some time looking at magnetism and electromagnets,
including applications of their use.
Key Performance Indicators
Students will be assessed to see if they:

Can describe the structure of both series and parallel circuits. Explain the effects of
current and that electric current is measured in Amps.

Can explain the terms: potential difference (measured in Volts) and calculate battery and
bulb ratings. Define resistance and state its units as Ohms.

Can measure the differences in resistance between conductors and insulators.

Can describe static electricity as the transfer of positive and negative charges when two
objects are rubbed together. Explain that it is the transfer of electrons and forces
between charged objects.

Can understand that magnetic poles form forces of attraction and repulsion.

Can describe the magnetic effect of a current on electromagnets and DC motors.

Physics: Energy
This unit focuses on the different forms of energy and how energy is transformed from one form
into another. They will also spend some time looking at energy calculations and efficiencies.
Key Performance Indicators
Students will be assessed to see if they:

Can understand and explain fuel bills, fuel uses and fuel costs.

Can describe fuels and energy resources.

Can explain that when there is a temperature difference between two objects, then heat
will be transferred from the hotter to the colder one. Explain this in terms of conduction,
convection and radiation. Describe the importance of insulators in limiting this process.

Can explain that the energy value is the same both before and after a change, and can be
quantified.

Can compare the starting and final conditions of a system and describe increases and
decreases in the amounts of energy associated with moments, temperatures, and
changes in positions in a field, in elastic distortions and in chemical compositions.

Can understand that a force changes depending on the direction of that force and its
size.

Can measure the differences in resistance between conductors and insulators.

Can describe the arrangements of particles, including their motion and closeness when
explaining changes in state. Explain these using the ice-water transition.

Physics: Motion and Pressure
In this unit, students focus on the speed equation. They investigate the factors that can affect speed
and will interpret motion graphs. They also look at pressure in solids, liquids and gases.
Key Performance Indicators
Students will be assessed to see if they:

Can compare the amount of energy transferred in J, KJ and KWhours

Can calculate speed, including average speed, distance and time. Using the speed
triangle.

Can explain the term relative motion in terms of trains and cars passing one another.

Can describe moments as a turning effect on a force.

Can explain that atmospheric pressure will decrease with increased height as the weight
of the air above, decreases with height.

Can describe the effects of pressure in liquids, with increasing depth, the effects of up
thrust and floating or sinking.

Can calculate the effect of pressure acting on any normal surface by calculating force
over area.
