GENERAL OVERVIEW
The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary is one of the world’s leading facilities for the diagnosis and treatment of
diseases of the eyes, ears, nose, throat and related conditions. Founded in 1820, it is the first and most historic
specialty hospital in the nation, as well as one of the busiest.
ACADEMIC AFFILIATIONS
The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary has some of the nation’s most competitive and highly regarded
residency programs in Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology/ Head & Neck Surgery, plus more than two dozen
post-graduate fellowships in subspecialties of Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology and Plastic & Reconstructive
Surgery. NYEE is an affiliated teaching hospital of New York Medical College. The Accreditation Council
for Continuing Medical Education has awarded NYEE’s Institute for Continuing Medical Education its
highest accreditation status – “Accreditation with Commendation” as a provider of continuing medical
education for physicians.
THE MEDICAL STAFF
The Medical Staff includes more than 600 board-certified attending physicians and surgeons throughout the
metropolitan area. Many are renowned for their breakthrough research introducing widely practiced techniques.
SPECIALTIES
Ophthalmology: Within this area are comprehensive eye care, cataract, cornea & external disease, refractive
surgery, eye trauma, glaucoma, pediatric glaucoma, low vision, neuro-ophthalmlogy, ophthalmic oncology,
ophthalmic pathology, oculoplastic & orbital surgery, pediatric ophthalmology & strabismus, retinal
vitreous, and uveitis/ocular immunology. Laser treatments, photographic and imaging services, and
electrophysiological testing are among the most advanced anywhere.
Otolaryngology: The department is in the forefront of treatment modalities using highly sophisticated
endoscopic and laser equipment. Subspecialties include rhinology, laryngology, head & neck surgery,
otology/neurotology, facial plastic surgery, pediatric otolaryngology, audiology, speech therapy and
hearing aid dispensing.
Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery: Microsurgical capabilities and premium patient accommodations provide
an optimum environment for facial plasty, liposuction, breast surgery and repair of defects from disease or trauma.
RELATED SERVICES
New York Eye Trauma Center: An advanced program for emergency treatment of eye injuries, it also
is the Eye Injury Registry of New York State and leading collector of data which will help develop
preventative strategies.
Ambulatory Surgery: A comprehensive Ambulatory Surgery Center is designed to expedite admission
testing, pre-op preparation and post-op recovery in an efficient and comfortable setting.
Pediatric Specialty Care: Services of eye and ear, nose and throat specialists are coordinated with other
professional and support staff especially sensitive to the youngest patients.
RESEARCH AND EDUCATION
The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary is a national and international leader in research in its specialties, achieving many
“firsts” in successful surgical procedures and medical treatments. Laboratories include Cell Culture, Ocular Imaging, and
Microsurgical Education. Over a hundred studies and clinical trials are currently being conducted.
