The Spartan Sixth NEWS FROM CORE CLASSES 6TH GRADE TEAM MARCH 1, 2016 SCIENCE –Ms. Harvey, Mrs. Lunagariya, and Mrs. Mell In sixth grade science, students demonstrated their knowledge of cells with a cell analogy project. Cells and their parts were compared to things such as a soccer field, a castle, a car, and even Minecraft. Students are presently learning all about viruses and bacteria and how they invade and act in our cells. The Zika virus will be discussed and provides a great opportunity to bring a current and meaningful occurrence into the classroom. The study of the nervous system is next as the information processing system of our bodies. MATH– Mrs. Lunagariya, Ms. Freidenfelds, and Ms. Akgul Sixth grade regular math students received their new worktext in math class for modules 3 and 4. Students will be working their way through the month comparing and ordering integers and rational number (decimals and fractions). Next, students will be reading, writing, and solving expressions and equations. Both numbers and symbols will be used to represent mathematical ideas and concepts. High math has been working with equations and inequalities, and will move into geometry. They will work with circles, rectangles, and triangles, finding perimeter and area. Please continue to check Infinite Campus to keep up on grades and assignments, and check the 6th grade math website for videos and activities to practice. https://sites.google.com/a/skokie69.net/ms-freidenfelds-swebsite/6th-grade-math https://sites.google.com/a/skokie69.net/ms-freidenfelds-swebsite/7th-grade-math SOCIAL STUDIES – Mrs. Tregoning & Mrs. Tran In ancient Greece & Rome, citizens relied on myths to explain what they could not. Mythology reflected the religious beliefs of these great civilizations. In midMarch students will read Greco-Roman mythology and create a digital plot line analysis. This project will bridge our study of classical Greece to the mighty Roman Empire, and reinforce concepts explored in ELA classes. Once the Romans conquered Carthage in northern Africa after a series of wars, the Empire began its rapid expansion throughout the Mediterranean region. During these warring times, the Senate would appoint a dictator to act as a leader for the Empire. In 44 BCE, Julius Caesar, a successful military leader, declared himself dictator. In fact, he wanted the Senate to declare him emperor for life! In addition to learning about Caesar, 6th graders will explore the ruins of Pompeii, read about gladiators and their battles in the Colosseum, identify achievements of the Roman Empire, from aqueducts to paved roads, and much more during our study of the Roman Empire. ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS – Mrs. Prena, Mrs. Mihalopoulos & Ms. Norman Chinese lanterns in Social Studies We are approaching the end of our humanities unit, "Connections to the Past". Students are studying and reading fantasy and folk literature like: folk tales, myths, and fables. We are analyzing the figurative language used in these types of stories. In the beginning of March, the students will begin their Quarter 3 book project. Sixth Grade Girls representing Lincoln in our Sports program.
