GERUND
PARTICIPLE
A verbal ending in ing
and used as a noun.
A verbal ending in ing
and used as an adjective
PARTICIPATING can be stressful.
The person PARTICIPATING most
fully is the person you want for the job.
Stephanie enjoys PLAYING
the harp.
PLAYING the harp, Stephanie
found the way to participate fully.
BIKING can be very relaxing.
BIKING by the shop, I noticed the
burglary in progress.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A GERUND, like any verb, may take an object, and it may be modified by an
adjective or an adverb.
1. I recall MAKING fudge that morning.
(Fudge is the object of the gerund MAKING.)
2. Heavy EATING can cause me to fall asleep.
(Heavy is an adjective, modifying the gerund EATING.)
3. BRUSHING well is the way to healthy teeth.
(Well is an adverb modifying the gerund BRUSHING.)
A PARTICIPLE, like any verb, may take an object.
The man STRETCHING his arms is the head lifeguard.
(Arms is the object of the participle STRETCHING.)
