HOMEWORK MENU OF ACTIVITIES FOR WORD STUDY
SENTENCES~
Select a different 5 words
from your list and write
them in complete
sentences in your word
study book. Make sure
that your word is
underlined and it makes
sense in the sentence.
Do not forget capital
letters and punctuation!
PATTERN SORT~
Place the key word
categories at the top of
the columns.
Sort the words into the
same categories you did in
school.
ALPHABETICAL
ORDER~
Sort and copy your
words in alphabetical
order on paper. It is not
as easy as it sounds- if the
first letters are the same,
go to the next letter.
Read the words aloud.
Copy your sort down in
your word study note
book. Be sure to spell
them correctly. Be sure to spell them
correctly. WORD HUNT ~
During nightly reading, find
your spelling words and
other words that have the
same pattern and
record them along with
the sentence you found
them in, - record in your
word study book. SYNONYMS &
ANTONYMS ~
MENU SPELLING TEST~
Have someone give you a
spelling test.
They say the word- you
write it.
At the end of the test – ue
the words to check if you
have spelled them
correctly.
Any spelled incorrectly?
Copy them correctly 3
times. OPEN CHOICE~
You do something that
shows that you know the
spellings and patterns… it
could be writing the
words in bubble letters/
or with blue vowels and
red consonants… or
something else… a
crossword/ wordsearch…
you decide. Choose 5 words.
List them on paper with a
•synonym (same meaning)
and …
•an antonym (opposite
meaning), for each word. SPEED SORT~
Sort your words and time
how long it takes you do
to put them into the
correct categories. You
could set a timer/
stopwatch or have
someone else time you.
Once you have sorted/
timed. Record the words
in their correct categories
in your book.
