Cell Parts Chart Jigsaw Notes - Day 1 "Leading Actors"
Working with your group, research and write the function of your cell part and if it is found in plant cells,
animal cells or both. Label your cell part on the diagrams (separate sheet). Use text pgs. 23-31.
Choose 1 person in your group to be the "Travelling Teacher" to teach the other groups about your
cell organelle. The remaining members will teach the Travelling Teachers of the other groups.
Structure
Plant(P),
Animal(A)
Nucleus
P and A
Cell (Plasma)
Membrane
P and A
ALL cells
Cell Wall
P
Function
Control center of cell; directs all cell
activities; contains DNA and nucleolus;
allows nutrients in and wastes out
(selectively/semi permeable); depends on
size
rigid outer structure made of cellulose;
gives support to plant cell
Chloroplast
P
converts sunlight energy into food energy or
glucose sugar (photosynthesis); gives plants
green color
Mitochondrion
P and A
converts food energy into usable energy
for cell (ATP); called powerhouse of cell
Ribosome
Vacuole
P and A
ALL cells
P and A
makes proteins; found in cytoplasm and on
surface of ER; found in ALL cells
stores food, water, minerals and other
materials; one large one in plants, many
small ones in animal
Smooth
Endoplasmic
Reticulum (ER)
P and A
transport materials within cell; no
ribosomes on it so "smooth"
Cell Parts Chart Jigsaw Notes - Day 2 "Supporting Actors"
Structure
Plant(P),
Animal(A)
Function
Nucleolus
P and A
Nuclear
Membrane
ribosomes made here; found in nucleus
outer membrane of nucleus; like cell's
P and A
membrane, lets things in/out of nucleus
contain enzymes to break down large food
particles, and old cell parts; membrane
Lysosome
A (some P)
keeps rest of cell safe
transports materials (especially proteins)
throughout cell; has ribosomes on surface
Rough ER
P and A
Cytoplasm
so "rough"
Most chemical reactions occur here; jelly-like
P and A
ALL Cells
substance organelles "float" in; contains many
nutrients; makes some energy
receives materials from outside cell or ER
and sends to where they need to go;
Golgi Body
(Complex)
packages and directs materials in/out &
P and A
around cell; usually near cell membrane
creates spindle fibers for chromosomes to
attach and pull apart during cell division
Centriole
A
(mitosis)
made of DNA; contains information to direct
Chromosomes
P and A
ALL Cells
all cell activities (especially production of
proteins); ALL CELLS HAVE DNA
