Main idea Main idea Consonance Dissonance • Consonance is a type of harmony. • Dissonance is a type of harmony. • Pitches that are consonant have passive at rest relationship with each other. • Pitches that are dissonant have an active, unsettled sound. • Major thirds and perfect fifths are examples of consonance. • A minor second is an example of dissonance. • Composers often use consonance to add a bright color to their music. • Composers often use dissonance to add a darker color (timbre) to their music. So what? What is important to understand about this? Composers and musicians use different types of harmony, like dissonance and consonance, in order to create changes in the mood of a piece of music.
