Course/Rotation description with educational purpose/value
The goal of this rotation is to allow future internists to gain exposure and expertise in reviewing
basic thoracic, abdominal, pelvic, and vascular imaging. In addition, it will allow future
internists a better understanding of which imaging modalities are appropriate for a given clinical
scenario. Lastly, the rotation has a goal preparing internists with an understanding of how to use
diagnostic radiologists as consultants to improve patient safety and outcomes.
The rotation will be spent one on one with a diagnostic radiologist (assigned by the course
director) reading films on both outpatient and inpatients in the Berkshire Medical Center reading
room. Self study and a didactic presentation may be assigned at the discretion of the rotation
director. The rotation director will provide times of duty at the beginning of the block.

items specific to this rotation as below
Patient Care:
This elective encourages a comprehensive approach to patient care: clinical decisions are made
based on synthesis of information provided by history, exam, labs, and imaging studies. Imaging
is becoming ever more prominent in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and it is essential for
house officers from all specialties to be familiar with basic imaging techniques and
interpretation.
Medical Knowledge:
 Knowledge of appropriate choice of diagnostic study to clinical question being asked.
 Knowledge of complications associated with imaging studies (contrast, gadolinium,
radiation).
 Knowledge and approach to interpreting plain films of the chest, abdomen, pelvis, and
bones for major medical diagnoses such as: pneumonia, pulmonary edema, free air,
obstruction, fracture, etc.
 Knowledge of basic interpretation of CT and MR imaging and the reasons indications for
the use of contrast agents.
 Knowledge of differential diagnoses for common findings
Practice-Based Learning:
 Ability to work independently with texts to improve skills and differential diagnosis.
Interpersonal and Communication Skills:
 Ability to work as a consultant to other medical specialties and provide advice and
expertise
2
Professionalism:
System-Based Practice:
 Understand how to access radiology services and when to utilize radiologist expertise in
the care of medical patients.
