Allergies Newsletter Professional Complementary Health Formulas Highest Quality Natural Pharmaceuticals PO Box 2034 • Lake Oswego, OR 97035-0630 • National/Canada (800) 952-2219 • Portland (503) 479-3150 • Fax (503) 479-3149 A Natural Approach to Allergies According to conservative estimates, some 15 million Americans are plagued by hayfever and more than 17 million have asthma. Twelve million more Americans suffer from allergies to food, drugs, chemicals, insect stings, and other environmental pollutants, not to mention allergic reactions such as eczema and hives. No professional line does a better job of addressing these issues with proven medicines than Professional Formulas. Hypersensitivties, Allergies and Intolerances The term “allergy” is commonly used to describe a patient’s physical, mental, and emotional reactions to various substances. And while these reactions may indeed be the result of allergies, they may also be the result of other hypersensitivities or intolerances with different root causes. Consequently, understanding the cause is the first and perhaps most important step toward treating the patient that suffers from so-called “allergic” reactions. The difference between allergic reactions, other hypersensitivities and intolerances isn’t always clear, but practitioners generally agree on the following distinctions: Allergies belong to a broader group of conditions called hypersensitivities, which are characterized by otherwise harmless environmental antigens eliciting an immune response that may be uncomfortable at least and harmful or even fatal at worst. “Allergy” is the common name for a Type I hypersensitivity in which a specific antibody response is caused by the presence of a protein (amino acid) chain, or a sensitizing antigen that has attached to a protein. The body’s immune system identifies the protein as harmful and produces Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies, which attach themselves to mast cells. When the substance – or allergen - is encountered again, these IgE-primed mast cells release histamine and other chemicals into the blood stream leading to allergic symptoms such as sneezing, itchy or water eyes, runny nose, hives, swelling or other inflammation, nausea, cramping, diarrhea and/or trouble breathing , among others. Allergic responses are often immediate, but they may be delayed by hours or days. Other Hypersensitivities such as Type II and Type III hypersensitivities are similar to allergies; however, Type II and Type III hypersensitivities typically involve IgG rather than IgE antibodies. These types of hypersensitivities involve immune responses to antibiotics, protein agents and autoantigens. Antibodies may be directed against antigens that are present on the surface of cells or within cell structures (Type II hypersensitivities) or may bind with soluble antigens to form immune complexes that may be deposited in tissues and organs (Type III hypersensitivities). Type IV hypersensitivities are not antibodymediated but instead are cell-mediated – usually by TH1 cells or cytotoxic T cells. A reaction to Poison Ivy is often a Type IV hypersensitivity. Intolerances unlike allergies do not involve a direct immune system response. Rather, an intolerance may be the result of the body’s response to toxins, environmental chemicals or other agents, faulty metabolic handling or digestive system issues. In some cases, the symptoms of intolerances may be very similar to the symptoms associated with allergies, even though the underlying physiological causes are very different. Many reactions to food are referred to as allergies; however, in many cases, these reactions are actually intolerances, caused by faulty metabolic handling rather than an immune response. This newsletter is focused on the causes of and treatments immune-related hypersensitivities in general and allergies in particular. Although intolerances are not discussed directly, many of the products used to assist with allergies and their symptoms may also be applicable to other hypersensitivities and intolerances. Treatment Considerations The symptoms of an allergic response are usually obvious and often cause the patient the greatest discomfor t; consequently, providing immediate relief to symptoms is extremely important. Steroid drugs as used in common allopathic treatments can reduce inflammation and open the air passages, but this approach does nothing to address the root problem. Indeed, treatment of symptoms (alone) does little to improve the patient’s long-term health, so a more comprehensive approach is required. In many cases, that comprehensive approach involves: Testing to properly identify the offending substance(s); Addressing liver dysfunction and hepatic congestion, toning the adrenal glands, and stimulating adequate transport and utilization of adrenal hormones – all to ensure proper immune response; and Desensitizing and enhancing the immune system to modulate the body’s inappropriate immune response and restore proper function. Testing & Identification Skin prick testing is a common but somewhat uncomfor table process in which a patient undergoes subcutaneous injections of allergens. The skin prick test may be an adequate starting point, but ultimately fails as a food diagnostic or as a follow up test. The Rast, Elisa, and Alcat tests probably provide the most useful information, while EAV or muscle testing techniques may all be helpful and the less intrusive. Avoidance and/or a rotation elimination diet are also valuable strategies for determining causative offenders. A number of causative factors may contribute to allergies. These factors may include: adrenal fatigue, drugs and vaccines, dietary habits, immunodeficiency, environmental toxic overload, impaired liver or digestive function, food additives and colorings, pesticides, heavy metals, parasites or other oppor tunistic organisms, and emotional issues. Accordingly, it is vital to address a patient’s history and overall health as par t of any allergy treatment protocol. When environmental toxicity is present or expected consider using Professional Formulas Xenobiotic Formulas to assist with body detoxification resulting from exposure to and assimilation of today’s environment. Please see our Catalog or request our Xenobiotics Newsletter for specific directions, dosing and protocol recommendations. Allersode Desensitization Allergic immune responses can be quite selective and complex. Antibodies are protein complexes produced by B lymphocytes (B cells). Antibodies recognize specific components of antigens, due to the antigens’ amino acid chains called ‘epitopes.’ Many attempts to treat allergies work by blocking of the cytokine/lymphokine response, thereby decreasing IgE levels indirectly. A better technique reduces IgE antibodies directly by desensitizing the immune system to offending allergens and their protein chains. The body’s system for identifying and targeting amino acids (epitopes) is one of the primary reasons for crossreactivity of allergens. Birch, for example, is composed of multiple sets of amino acid chains. Some of these amino acid chains (similar to phenolic compounds in foods) are found among a large number of other trees. Consequently, a patient with a birch allergy may develop crossover reactions to other trees with continued exposure to the amino acid chains in birch. For effective results, treatment through desensitization must include the full spectrum of amino acid chains. Otherwise, the patient may experience a partially successful desensitization to one allergen but a hypersensitive, exacerbated symptom response to the cross-reactive amino acid chains. In the case of desensitization to a food, treatment should also consider the presence of foreign epitope structures from genetically modified organisms. Finally, the presence of phenolics, toxins, metals, and/or pathogens can all increase IgE levels and cause a patient to develop a hypersensitivity to a multitude of items. In these cases, concurrent treatment is required to interrupt the cytokine-TH2-IgE cycle. Professional Formulas Allersode Desensitization Formulas epitomize Hahnemann’s “like cures like” fundamental principal of homeopathy. These are isopathic preparations of the causative substances given in an oral dose to assist the body in developing a tolerance. Diluted homeopathic doses ‘turn off ’ the body’s hyper-responsiveness. Allersodes combine an array of common allergenic materials with Adrenal, Liver, ACTH, and Histamine to promote non-specific resistance and symptomatic assistance to allergic stressors. These formulations will also provide a mild anti-histamine effect due to the inclusion of specific ingredients. Dose according to desensitization protocol based on response type. Please see our Catalog or request our Allersode Newsletter for specific directions of dosing and protocol recommendations. Adrenal Insufficiency Adrenal insufficiency is a major cause of allergies to pollen, dust, mold, animal hair/dander, foods, chemicals, and environmental pollutants. The underlying cause of improperly functioning adrenal glands may be poor nutrition, insufficient stimulation of the adrenal glands by the pituitary gland, or the inadequate transport and utilization of the adrenal hormones by the body. For adrenal insufficiency consider the following products: Adrenal Complex (GAC/GACLG): Provides New Zealand glandular tissue and additional synergistic co-factors to stimulate and restore the adrenals. Useful for maintaining proper mineral ratios and assisting the body’s response to stress. Additionally, it plays a role in minimizing the pro-inflammatory response. Pure Adrenal (GPA2/GPALG/GPA4): Provides pure New Zealand glandular tissue to stimulate and restore the adrenals. Adrenal Liquescence (T1): Helps tonify the adrenals and provide regeneration and drainage. Adrenal Drops (HAD): Provides specific sarcode support for the adrenals. *Additional adrenal sarcode formulas available please see the sarcode section of our catalog. PhytoEnergize (PPE): Is an all herbal formula alternative to our Adrenal Complex; it provides the same support for maintaining proper mineral ratios and assists the body’s response to stress. Additionally, it plays a role in minimizing the pro-inflammatory response. Liver Dysfunction The liver is particularly enriched with cells of the innate immune system; the liver is where foreign antigens from the gastrointestinal tract first encounter the innate immune system defenses. A stagnant liver congested with toxins (including heavy metals) and fatty tissue cannot neutralize an allergenic reaction. A properly functioning liver contributes to appropriate immune responses, rather than the exaggerated or inappropriate responses that characterize allergic reactions. For hepatic congestion and/or to help restore proper liver function, consider: Pure Liver (GPL): Pure New Zealand glandular formula to stimulate and restore the liver, and to promote xenobiotic detoxification process. Herbal Hepaclenz (PHC): A nutritional adjunct to liver metabolism; provides hepato-protective actions. Picrorrhiza Complex (PPIC): Herbs that assist in the detoxification of the liver and bowel while strengthening the immune system. Liver Liquescence (T15): Helps tonify the liver and provide regeneration and drainage. Hepaticol Drops (HHD): Provides specific sarcode support for the liver. Lipotro Complex (VLC/VLCLG): Assists with proper liver and gallbladder functions, and includes choline which exerts a hepato-protective action. Provides sustained release which ensures a uniform dispersion within the digestive tract.
