Big Question- How well did feudalism establish order in Europe in the Middle Ages?
2.1 Introduction
1. When and why did the Early Middle Ages begin?
The fall of the Roman Empire in 476 C.E. was the beginning of the Middle Ages in Europe.
2. Describe the various levels of feudalism and how this structure established security.
1. Monarch at the top 2. Lords or Nobles-usually a landowner 3. Knights or Warriors
protected the lord 4. Peasants- worked the land 5. Serfs- peasants who were not free to leave
the lord’s land
2.2 Western Europe During the Middle Ages
1. What led to the success of the Franks after the fall of the Roman Empire?
The Franks were successful because they had developed a new style of warfare- knights were
heavily armed and fought on horseback.
2. How did Clovis bring unity to the empire?
Clovis was baptized a Christian and Christianity brought unity and spread through the empire.
3. How did Charlemagne strengthen the Frank’s empire?
Charlemagne encouraged education and scholarship making his court a center of culture. He
unified almost all the Christians into a single empire.
4. Name the 3 groups of warriors that the people of Western Europe fought with.
Muslims- Middle East and northern Africa, Magyars-central Asia, Vikings- Norway and Denmark
2.3 Feudalism: Establishing Order
1. How did the lords keep track of the promises they made to the knights?
Written contracts
2. How did a person change their social class?
People were born into a social class for life.
2.4 Monarchs During Feudal Times
1. Monarchs are at the top of the feudalism social classes. How did they manage their power?
Monarchs believed that God gave them the right to rule and nobles provided knights and
soldiers to protect them.
2. What do they mean, “the feudal system had brought stability to much of Europe.”
There was order and everyone knew their place and job.
2.5 Lord and Ladies During Feudal Times
1. Lords and ladies lived in a manor house which was protected by a high wall.
2. Kings and queens lived in a castle with moats,
strong walls and gates for protection.
3. Name 5 things that the lord was held accountable for in feudalism?
- manage and defend his land and the people who worked it
-appoint officials to make sure villagers carry out duties
-act as judges in manor courts and fine and punish those who broke the law
-hold posts in the king’s government
-fight for their own higher-ranking lords or supply a fighting force.
4. The noblewomen were an important element in feudal times. Describe their responsibilities.
Raising and training their own children, along with children from other noble families
Overseeing the household, which held hundreds of people – priests, master hunters, knights in
training, cooks, servants, artists, etc.
2.6 Knights During Feudal Times
1. Describe the different phases a boy went through to become a knight.
First, a knight started out as a page or a servant – working with the women in the manor to
learns social expectations for behavior
Next, the knight would become a squire where they would serve a knight – tending his armor,
helping him dress and becoming trained for battle
Once considered worthy of becoming a knight, a special ceremony takes place in which the
knight makes vows to uphold the values of knighthood and provide protection for the Lord.
2. Once you become a knight, what were your duties?
Be loyal to the church and to their lord, to be just and fair, and to protect the helpless
Perform acts of gallantry and participate in jousts and tournaments
Protect the people
2.7 Peasants During Feudal Times
1. If you were a free peasant, what were your duties?
-raise crops and tend livestock
-serve as a carpenter, shoemaker, smith or other skilled worker
- pay their taxes to the lord
2. How was life different for the peasants who were not free or called serfs?
Free peasants could leave the manor for special events, but unfree peasants could not leave the
manor.
