The Cell Lab ( Virtual Version)
In this lab you will observe real slides of a variety of living ( once living) cells. You will be able
to observe several different organelles and structures and should be able to compare and contrast
the cells of plants and animals.
The links listed are to the slide of that cell type.
Part 1: The Onion Cell
http://www.biologycorner.com/wp-content/uploads/onion001.jpg
1. How could you tell from the shape of the onion cells that they came from a plant?
____________________________________________________________________________
2. Drops of iodine were used to stain this sample. Iodine is a dark reddish brown stain. Why do
you think iodine was used on this sample?
____________________________________________________________________________
Part 2: The Human Cheek Cell
http://www.biologycorner.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/cheek05.jpg
1. How is the shape of the cheek cell different from the onion cell?
____________________________________________________________________________
2. The shape of the onion cell is different because it has a _____________________ but the
human cheek cell does not.
3. What part of the cheek cell stained the darkest ( in other words, what is the dark blue dot in the
middle)?
____________________________________________________________________________
Part 3: The Leaf Cell ( Elodea Cell)
http://www.biologycorner.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/elodea02.jpg
1. How is the shape of the Elodea cells similar to the onion cells?
____________________________________________________________________________
2. What organelle is present in Elodea cells that is not in the onion?
____________________________________________________________________________
3. What is the function of the chloroplasts? _________________________________________
4. The onion and the Elodea are both plants. Think about the difference in an onion and a leaf.
Why does a leaf cell have chloroplasts, but the onion cell does not?
_____________________________________________________________________________
5. What two cell parts did the Elodea cells have that the human cheek cell did not?
_____________________________ and _______________________________
