In Karima Merchant’s senior thesis, she outlined nine influence tactics, defined by Gary
Yukl and Carolyn Chavez, that leaders may use in order to achieve goals:
• Inspirational Appeal: appealing to the person's feelings to elicit commitment
• Rational Persuasion: using logic to objectify arguments
• Consultation: inviting suggestions and comments to seek involvement
• Ingratiation: using flattery and praise to convince
• Personal Appeals: appealing to the person based on existing intimacy or relationship
• Exchange: promising to return the favor
• Coalition Tactics: gaining support using the Bandwagon Fallacy
• Legitimating Tactics: going back to the basic rules & procedures to win support
• Pressure: intimidating to gain compliance
Each approach has one goal in mind—to get buy-in. Comparing leadership approach
utilized by men and women, it was found that men lead using personal appeal,
consultation, assertiveness, and inspirational appeal. Female managers tend to use
different approaches when dealing with female and male colleagues. With fellow
females, consultation, inspirational appeal, and ingratiation are more evident, and with
males, exchange tactics.
5. Have the student answer the questions.
Possible answers:
1. First is gender being an influence to one’s leadership style. Another belief is that of circumstance,
and not gender, being the primary factor in the approach to leading.
2. See article.
3. Men use personal appeal, consultation, assertiveness, and inspirational appeal.
4. Women use consultation, inspirational appeal, and ingratiation with fellow women and
exchange tactics with men.
6. Complete the final activity.
• Engage in a conversation with the student
• Try to build on the information the student gives you and exchange ideas
• Give feedback by REFINING the student's English
Read the article and pause after each paragraph.
So who makes the better leader, men or women? Well, there are two schools of
thought on gender differences in leadership style. The first one recognizes gender’s
pivotal role in effective leadership. According to its proponents, men and women
approach leadership each with a different goal in mind. While men seek to dominate,
women are more for commitment. On the other hand, opponents argue that effective
leadership is not governed by gender and is rather based on circumstances.
At the end of the day, does it really matter whether we are reporting to a male or
female boss? Aristotle advises, “He who cannot be a good follower cannot be a good
leader.”
