Identitytheftoccurswhensomeoneusesyourpersonalinformationsuchasyoursocialsecuritynumber
oraccountnumberwithoutyourpermission,tocommitfraudorothercrimes.Helpprotectyourselfby:

mayappeartocomefromagovernmentagency,includingoneofthefederalinstitutionregulatory
agencies.
Thee-mailwillwarnyouofaseriousproblemthatrequiresyourimmediateattentionandencourage
youtoclickonabuttontogototheinstitution’swebsite.
Youthencouldberedirectedtoaphonywebsitethatmaylookexactlyliketherealthing.Sometimes,in
fact,itmaybethecompany’sactualwebsite.Inthosecases,apop-upwindowwillquicklyappearfor
thepurposeofharvestingyourfinancialinformation.
Ineithercase,youmaybeaskedtoupdateyouraccountinformationortoprovideinformationfor
verificationpurposessuchasyoursocialsecuritynumber,accountnumber,password,orthe
