Eastern and Western Roman Empire to 500 A.D.
& The Byzantine Empire 1000 A.D.
Directions: Locate and Label the following places on the map of the Roman Empire. Use the
maps on pages 251, 272 and 283 for help. Follow the steps in order below! Be sure to use
the correct colors as directed below!
A. The Byzantine Empire (page 283) – 5 points
1. Find the approximate area of “Asia Minor” on your map, and label as the “Byzantine
Empire” in your map key. Color the area purple and include the purple square in your
map key.
2. Do your best to make the area as exact as possible using the map on page 283 for help
as you work.
B. The Eastern and Western Roman Empires (page 272) – 10 points
1. Using the map on page 272 as a guide, color the Western Roman Empire yellow and
the Eastern Roman Empire green.
2. Be sure to color around the purple Byzantine Empire as you shade in the Eastern Roman
Empire. Do not color over the purple area.
3. The dividing lines for the Eastern and Western sides are drawn in for you, be sure to
look for them.
4. Use the map Key to color in the squares yellow and green like the one on page 272.
C. The Roman Empire – General (page 251) – 20 points
1. Using black, label the following countries in the same approximate areas as the map on
page 251. Each country is NOT its own color. You are simply adding the country
names like the map on page 251.
a. Britain
b. Spain
c. Mauretania
d. Gaul
e. Germany
f. Italy
g. Africa
h. Dacia
i. Thrace
j. Greece
k. Libya
l. Asia Minor (should already be labeled from Byzantine Empire above)

2. Using red, label each of the following important cities, like the map on page 251

3. Using blue, label each of the following bodies of water, like the map on page 251
