Midterm Review Project
To prepare for the midterm, you will make a study guide for the topics that we have covered so far this year. First, fold a
piece of paper into quarters. Then using both sides of the paper, complete the tasks under the following 8 topics. Use
your notes and book to complete this assignment.
Scientific Method
Define IV, DV, control, constant, qualitative and quantitative data
Draw a bar graph showing the effect of school location on the amount of bacteria present. Be sure to put the IV and
DV on the appropriate axis and include a title and axis labels.
Define theory, hypothesis and conclusion. Give an example of each.
Identify the units for length, volume and mass.
Write out the acronym used for metric conversions.
Classification
List the 8 characteristics of living things
Create a dichotomous key to distinguish the following from each other: dog, cat, monkey, zebra
List the 8 classification taxa from most general to most specific
Write one sentence to describe why viruses are not considered living things
Identify the 3 domains and their defining characteristics
Make a table to describe the general characteristics of the 6 kingdoms
Chemistry
Draw and atom and label the parts
Define ion, isotope, atomic number
Label a square of the periodic table: label atomic symbol, name, atomic mass, atomic number; calculate the number
or protons, neutrons and electrons for that element
Define polarity and draw a picture of a polar water molecule
Describe the following properties of water: heat storage, high heat of vaporization, adhesion, cohesion, surface
tension, universal solvent
Define acid and base in terms of their hydrogen ions (H+) concentration relative to water (higher or lower) and their
value on the pH scale
Macromolecules
Describe the function of each macromolecule, list the monomers, and give an example of each including a picture
o carbohydrates
o proteins
o nucleic acids
o lipids
Describe the factors that affect enzyme activity
Describe how enzymes affect the rate of chemical reactions, include a picture (use the following key terms:
reactants, products, activation energy)
Cell Structure
Draw and label a plant cell
Draw and label an animal cell
List the differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes
List two things to look for when trying to decide if a cell is from a plant or animal
List the 12 major organelles and their functions

Cell Membrane and Transport
Draw a picture of the cell membrane and label the parts (phospholipids, carrier proteins)
Draw 3 pictures to represent a cell in hypotonic, hypertonic and isotonic solutions. Be sure to write the
concentration of solute inside the cell vs. outside the cell and draw an arrow to show the direction water would
move.
Photosynthesis and Respiration
Define autotroph and heterotroph
Write the equation for photosynthesis and describe why in happens in a cell and where it happens
Write the equation for cell respiration and describe why it happens in a cell and where it happens
Mitosis and Meiosis
Draw and label the 4 stages of mitosis
Draw and label the 8 stages of meiosis
Write the purpose for each process
Write the end product for each process
Define haploid and diploid
