Monday, 12/2/2013 A.A.22 – Solving multi-step equations with variables on one side Let’s go on a solving equation journey with Modja! (MODJA THINKS) I know the question wants me to get x alone. How to start? MODJA’S JOURNEY WITH SOLVING EQUATION Solve for x: (1) (MODJA THINKS) To solve this problem, the parenthesis needs to disappear. How can I make it disappear? (2) (MODJA ANSWERS) I know there’s multiplication ( ) between “-8” and “(2x-1)”. I can use the Distributive Property (3) (MODJA THINKS) How can I get rid of this (+8) so “-16x” can be alone? (5) (MODJA THINKS) How can I get rid of “-16” so x is alone? (6) (MODJA ANSWERS) The opposite of “multiply by -16” is “divided by -16”. Let me divide by 16 to both left side and right side. (4) (MODJA ANSWERS) The opposite of “plus 8” is “minus 8”. Let me minus 8 to both the left side and the right side. A SNAP SHOT OF MODJA’S THINKING: MODJA’S HABITS OF WORK WE CAN CONSIDER Before trying to answer the question, ask myself “What is the question asking me to do?” In each step of the problem solving, ask myself “Why did I do that?”
