Communication Principles
 Communication is not a thing, it is a process
– Communication is not constant; it is dynamic and ever changing—communication
scholars focus on a continuous, ongoing, process without a clearly defined
beginning or end
 Communication is not linear, it is circular
– We have progressed from the action model of communication to the transactional
model
 Communication is complex
– Communication involves much more than one person sending messages to
another—it involves the negotiation of shared interpretations and understandings
 6 people in one-to-one conversation
– Who you think you are,
– who you think the other person is,
– who you think the other person thinks you are,
– who the other person thinks s/he is,
– who the other person thinks you are,
– who the other person thinks you think s/he is
 Communication is irreversible
– You can never really “take back” something you have said—you can apologize,
but not erase (especially the meaning someone takes from you message)
 Communication involves the total personality
– Communication is more than a set of behaviors; it is the primary defining
characteristic of a human being
 Our view of others is shaped, defined, and maintained through
communication
