 Napoleon excludes British goods
 British create blockade to stop Napoleon

 Americans are angry with British
 Impressment – capturing Americans and forcing them into the navy
 Chesapeake incident
 1807 – British commander demanded to board and search the
Chesapeake, U.S. captain refused, British opened fire killing 3 and injuring

 Ban lifted in 1809 EXCEPT with France and Britain
TECUMSEH’S CONFEDERACY
 William Henry Harrison met
with Native American chiefs to
sign over 3 million acres of
land to U.S. government
 Shawnee Chief Tecumseh did
not like the idea and wanted
to form a confederacy
 Tecumseh began negotiations
with British in case a war
happened
 Traveled throughout west and
south trying to win tribal
followers

 Harrison fought back and
burned Shawnee’s capital to
the ground
 Battle of Tippecanoe
 Found out Shawnee used
British Canadian supplies,
so war hawks call for war

 James Madison wins election of 1808, wages war against
Britain in 1812.
 British quickly capture Detroit
 Oliver Hazard Perry then defeat British on Lake Erie and
retake Detroit
 Natives took sides, many choosing British
 Tecumseh died in Battle of the Thames in 1813

 U.S. Navy only had 16 ships
 44-gun warships the President, the United States, and the

 British enforced blockade of American ships in 1813
 1814 – British raiding and burning towns
 Retaliation for Battle of York where U.S. burned governor’s
mansion and legislative buildings
 British burn the Capitol, the White House, and other buildings
forcing of ficials to flee
