 New technologies include:





An instrument that aids in the

Magnetic Compass

A navigational instrument that shows
directions
Astrolabe

An instrument used by navigators and
astronomers to determine latitude,
longitude, and time of day based on the
position of the sun and stars.
Lateen Sail

A triangular sail that was important to
navigation. It increased the potential of
a sailing ship.
Frigate

A warship
Galleon

A large, multi-decked sailing ship
Caravel

A small, light weight, high speed sailing
ship.
Henry the Navigator
Sent many sailing expeditions down
Africa’s west coast.
 Patron of explorers.
 Expeditions were sent to create muchneeded maps of the West African coast,
to defeat the Muslims, to spread
Christianity, and to establish trade
routes.
 Started the first school for oceanic
navigation.

