Overview
1.Canada’s historical social and economic
systems
2.Similarities between Medieval
European systems and Canadian
systems; past and present
3.Things to consider about Feudalism
4.Different points of view; FeudalismGood or bad idea?
5.Research: 100 Years War and The Black
Death
Similarities?
• Although several social and economic
structures lasted for many years in
Canada, some eventually began to
weaken and disappear altogether.
• However, some aspects of them remain
today.
• Research, explore, inquire, construct!
Social/Economic Structures in
Canada…Some things to Consider…
• What social/economic structures
existed in Canada’s history?
• Why are some of these no longer in
place today? Why are some aspects of
them still evident today?
• Whose interests were best served by
some of these systems?
• What kinds of pressures do you think
might have caused these systems to
eventually break down? Brainstorm!
Feudalism… Some things to
Consider…
• Although the feudal system lasted for
many hundreds of years, it eventually
began to weaken and finally disappeared
altogether.
• Whose interests were best served by
feudalism?
• What kinds of pressures do you think
might have caused feudalism to eventually
break down? Brainstorm!
Different Points of View
When people have different points of
view on an issue, this does not mean
that one person is wrong and the
other person is right. They may simply
be applying different “criteria.”
Criteria are the rules or standards that
you use to judge something.
Different Points of View
• The next two slides present two viewpoints regarding
the Feudal System.
As I read each passage, ask yourself:
• What point of view is the author presenting?
• Identify details from the passage that highlight either
the positive or negative aspects of Feudalism.
• What criteria has each writer used to assess the Feudal
system?
Viewpoint One
Viewpoint Two
These mischievous people [the peasants]
thus assembled without captain or armour
robbed, brent [burned] and slew [killed] all
gentlemen that they could lay hands
on…and did such shameful deeds that no
human creature ought to think on any
such and he that did most mischief was
most praised with them and greatest
master.
Think about it…
• If half the people in Canada
suddenly died of a terrible
disease, how do you think this
would affect our society?
• Can you think of examples in
Canadian history where this has
happened? What effect(s) did
(has) it have (had) on Canadian
society?
Research/Journal Project…
• The Black Death (Pages 25-28 in
text book)
