Essential Questions
1. How do variables help you model real-world situations?
Answer: You can use variables to represent variable
quantities in real-world situations and in patterns.
2. How can you use the properties of real numbers to
simplify algebraic expressions?
Answer: The properties that apply to real numbers also
apply to variables that represent them.
3. How do you solve an equation or inequality?
Answer: You can use properties of real numbers and
equality to solve an equation by finding increasing
simpler equations that have the same solutions as the
original equation.
What You Need to Know
• Find the next term in a pattern (geometric,
number, words, graph, etc.).
• Find the nth term algebraic expression for a
pattern.
• The different subsets of real numbers (both name
and notation) and be able classify both numbers
and variables as to which sets they belong.
• Graph and compare real numbers on the number
line and using inequality signs.
What You Need to Know
• The properties of real numbers and be able to
identify the properties given an example.
• Evaluate both numerical and algebraic expressions
using the order of operations.
• Transform words into algebraic expressions.
• Simplify algebraic expressions using the
distributive property and combining like terms.
• Properties of equality and use them to solve linear
equations.
What You Need to Know
• Solve identity linear equations (all real numbers)
and contradiction linear equations (no solution).
• Solve literal equations.
• Transform words into a linear equation and solve.
