ROMEO AND JULIET Analysis of Movement DANCE OF THE KNIGHTS (MEN) ACTION SPACE • • Travelling in 4 straight lines one behind the other. 3 main characters in between the 4 lines. • Walks going from the front of the stage to the back and the back to the front. • Crossing in coup de pied going from side to side on the spot • • • Simple stepping movements and walks (very repetitive) Rande de jambe à terre One hand ‘presenting’, other hand on hip Crossing the foot over in coup de pied DANCE OF THE KNIGHTS (MEN) DYNAMICS RELATIONSHIPS Strong and smooth Unison DANCE OF THE KNIGHTS (WOMEN) ACTION SPACE • Walking (repetitive) side to side • Walk on in lines between the with arm gesture reaching out men from chest, other arm on chest, • Side to side when gesturing tilting head to side. • Cross arms over above head, sweep body around to the other side and twist wrists keeping arms above head. DANCE OF THE KNIGHTS (WOMEN) DYNAMICS RELATIONSHIPS Gentle and flowing Unison DANCE OF THE KNIGHTS (MEN AND WOMEN) ACTION SPACE • • • • • • • • Women circle men in pairs and then hold a pose with elbow resting on hand. They then extend their arm as the men circle them. Men and women circle each other (walking) shoulder to shoulder both facing away from each other and half a turn. They then repeat. Women slight backbend with arms crossed across chest and men standing behind hands on hips. Men reverse port de bras of the arms as women walk in front repeating their gesture with the hand coming out from chest. Men then cross the foot over in coup de pied from side to side Women courtesy and cross over to the other side of the men and kneel down middle finger and thumb together. She performs a triple pirouette en pointe and rande de jambe en l’air to arabesque, arms in 2nd palms facing up. • • Vertical splits with right leg in front. Rande jambe en l’air. Arabesque and then falls into his arms. Falls the other way. • Romeo goes down on one knee and presents to her, then lifts juliet lying on his shoulders, juliet lifts leg up in développé at 90 degrees he lowers her down then repeats the lift three times. • Juliet supported by romeo around her waist. Performs a double pirouette • Romeo walks around juliet with arm around juliets waist then spins her round. Drop and hug. Repeated. Facing stage right. CONTINUED… BALCONY SCENE Action Romeo lifts juliet up off the floor and sweeps her feet across the floor. Lift turns into arabesque and Romeo holds juliet round the waist and spins her. Juliet développé her leg. Repeats again but romeo puts his arm out to compliment the développé. Romeo chases Juliet and pulls her back. Into a lift where she does a grandé jeté spins her round into an arabesque Romeo supports juliet in a spin Romeo lifts Juliet into a lift (inversion) Juliets held upside down on Romeos shoulders, he puts her down and hugs her skirt Juliet runs away and Romeo chases after her. Juliet does an arabesque and Romeo catches her. Relationships
