Aristocracy
• In this type of political system, only the
wealthy or educated (usually they are one in
the same) can hold power or political office.
• Critics of developed countries like the United
States claim that this is what our country
really is.
Example
• Ancient Romans had
one of the earliest
forms of democracy
however, only male
citizens (usually of
noble birth) could
participate in politics.
Theocracy
• In this political system, the head of the state is
also the head of the religion or laws for the
country are based upon the main religion.
Example of Theocracy
• Pope Benedict is the
head of the Catholic
Church and the head of
state for the Vatican
City.
Totalitarianism
• This is an extreme form of dictatorship. Under
this type of political system, not only does one
individual make all the rules and decisions,
but they try to change to the culture of the
country and its people.
Example
• During the 1930’s and
1940’s, Adolph Hitler
attempted to change
Germany’s culture and
population by
eliminating several
ethnic groups and
experimenting with
human genetics.
Modern Example
• Kim Jung Il of North
Korea controls all of the
media and basic needs
of his country. He even
has directed movies
that were filmed to
make himself appear to
be a hero.
