Multiplication and Division
Unit 4 focuses on the most common uses of multiplication and division—problems that
involve equal sharing and equal grouping. In Second Grade Everyday Mathematics,
children were exposed to multiplication and division number stories and multiplication
and division facts. To solve multiplication and division number stories, children will refer
to familiar strategies introduced in second grade:

Division Arrays
Players make arrays with counters. They use number cards to determine the
number of counters and a toss of a die to establish the number of rows.
Beat the Calculator
A Calculator (a player who uses a calculator) and a Brain (a player who
solves the problem without a calculator) compete to see who will be first
to solve multiplication problems.

Do-Anytime Activities
To work with your child on concepts taught in this unit and in previous units,
try these interesting and rewarding activities:
1. Together with your child, sort objects into equal groups. Discuss what you could do
with any leftover objects.
2. Review multiplication-fact shortcuts:
turn-around facts The order of the factors does not change the product. Thus,
if you know 3 4 12, you also know 4 3 12.
multiplication by 1 The product of 1 and another number is always equal to
the other number. For example, 1 9 9; 1 7 7.
multiplication by 0 The product of 0 and another number is always 0. For
example, 4 0 0; 0 2 0.
square numbers Arrays for numbers multiplied by themselves are always
squares. For example, 2 2 and 4 4 are square numbers.

Playing Everyday Math Games at
Home for Grades 3 and 4
All games require one deck of regular playing cards (with Jokers
removed) and can be played by 2-3 players or teams. If using the face
cards, remind everyone that J = 11, Q = 12, and K = 13.

1. Shuffle the deck and place it face down in the center.
2. Each player turns over 2 cards and calls out the sum
of the numbers. Players should check each other’s
sums.
3. The player with the greatest sum takes all the cards.
In the case of a tie, each tied player turns over 2
more cards and calls out the sum. The player with
the greater sum takes all of the cards from both
plays.
4. Play ends when not enough cards are left for each
player to have another turn.
5. The player who collected the most cards wins.

Practices using the
four operations to
name numbers
1. Use all of the cards.
2. Place the deck face down in the center. Put five
cards face up to the left of the deck.
3. Turn over the top card on the deck. This is the
target number.
4. The first player tries to “name” the target number by
adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing the
numbers on as many of the 5 cards that are face up
as possible. If the player is successful, he or she
takes the target number and the other cards used to
name the target number. Those cards are replaced
by new cards from the deck.
5. If the player cannot name the target number, their
turn is over and the next card on the top of the deck
is turned over to be the target number.
6. The game is over when all of the cards in the deck
have been turned over. The winner is the player
who has collected the most cards.
Example: If the target number is 10 and the five cards
are 2, 3, 4, 7, and 8, some possible solutions are
3 + 7 = 10 (2 cards used)
(2 * 3) + 4 = 10 (3 cards used)
8 + (4/2) = 10 (3 cards used)
7 – 3 + 4 + 2 = 10 (4 cards used)
