Where The Aztecs Ruled The Aztec Empire covered a lot of modern-day Mexico and Central America. Founding the Empire Around 700 years ago the tribe searched for new places to settle. They came upon Lake Texcoco. They decided to settle here because they got a sign: an eagle, perched on cactus, holding a snake in its mouth. Chinampas There wasn’t a lot of land in Lake Texcoco so they decided to build Chinampas. These are islands made by piling up mud and reeds from the water. They built their city on this. Tenochtitlán After many years of development the settlement grew into the city of Tenochtitlán. This city was the main centre of the Aztec Empire. Aztec Gods The Aztecs worshipped the Gods of Sun, Rain and Earth. Tonatiuh was the Sun God. The Aztecs believed he was the leader of Tollan (heaven). Aztec Sacrifices The Aztecs believed that they had to sacrifice human hearts to the gods to please them. The Aztecs believed that it was a good way to die. 10, 000 people were once sacrificed in four days. Aztec Markets The Aztecs had markets at which they bartered and sold things at. The Aztecs ate a lot of meat and fish as the main part of their diet. The Aztecs also grew corn, beans, tomatoes and other vegetables. Chocolate The Aztecs were big fans of cacao beans to make hot chocolate with added chillies to make it spicier! A Tragic End The Spanish Army arrived in Tenochtitlán in 1519. They brought iron weapons, horses, wheeled-vehicles and, unfortunately, diseases with them. In oneyear half the Aztecs in Tenochtitlán were wiped out by small pox. In 1521 the Spanish attacked Tenochtitlán. They destroyed the Aztec buildings and rebuilt their own city. They renamed it Mexico City The End Thank you all for watching!
