GRAMMAR PACKET #8 Verbals Verbals are forms of a verb that are used not as verbs but as other parts of speech. Participle A participle is a verb form used as an adjective. consist of the plain form of the verb plus –ing. Present participles Examples: The drinking duck gulped. Drinking is the present participle modifying the noun duck. It answers the question, “Which duck?” Glancing at the swinging western doors, Daffy shook his head. Glancing is the past participle modifying the noun Daffy. the question, “Which Daffy?” It answers Past participles consist of the plain form of the verb plus –d or –ed. If the verb is irregular, the past participle might end in –t or –en. Example: The hurried sidekick pig rode a mule. Hurried is the past participle modifying the noun phrase sidekick pig. It answers the question, “Which sidekick pig?” Porky was not surprised. Surprised is the past participle modifying the noun Porky. answers the question, “Which one?” It Participial Phrase A participial phrase consists of a participle and its related words, such as modifiers and complements, all of which act together as an adjective. Example: Phrase Subject (Approaching the Alderaan system), (the Death Star) (slowed) (to attack). Predicate (Intransitive Verb) Phrase 1 GRAMMAR PACKET #8 Which Death Star? Participial Phrase (present participle) (Approaching the Alderaan system), the Death Star slowed to attack. This combines two ideas: (1) The Death Star approaches the Alderaan system. (2) The Death Star slowed to attack. Example: Subject Predicate (Transitive Verb) Direct Object Phrase (Boba Fett) (observed) (Han Solo) (hidden in an asteroid field). Which Han Solo? Participial Phrase (past participle) Boba Fett observed Han Solo (hidden in an asteroid field). This combines two ideas: (1) Boba Fett observed Han Solo. (2) Han Solo was hidden in an asteroid field. Look for common nouns in order to combine ideas with participial phrases. DIRECTIONS: Underline the three participial phrases. Draw an arrow to the nouns they modify.
