Journal #18-‐-‐-‐”A Black Man Talks of Reaping” (p. 947) Mrs. Dolhon Extended Metaphor A metaphor is a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two things that have something in common. An extended metaphor draws that comparison out and compares the two things in many ways. Sometimes the comparison is carried throughout a stanza, a paragraph, or an entire literary work. Identify and interpret the parts of the extended metaphor in “A Black man Talks of Reaping,” in which the African-‐American race is compared to a farmer. In the chart below, one example is done for you. In addition to that example, find at least three other parts of the metaphor and write interpretations for each. Parts of the Metaphor Interpretation “I scattered seed enough to plant the African Americans have worked hard to land/In rows from Canada to Mexico” make a living throughout the United States. Allusion: This poem alludes to a biblical passage from Paul’s letter to the Galatians (6:7): “Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” What does the poem say about this idea? Explain your answer using support from the text.
