Study Guide for Primary Source Readings
1. Why might the Union soldiers burn the town of Friars Point as they were
leaving? Why would the generals (as Jordan notes) not approve? And why then
would the troops do it anyway?
2. What were the practical purposes of looting stores and stealing farm stock,
such as the chickens that the Union soldiers took at Friars Point?
3. Why were the Union troops ordered to tear up several miles of the Vicksburg
and Texas Railroad and burn a bridge?
4. How much does William Jordan appear to know about why, when, and how
his brigade is moved about on this campaign?
5. Based on both the Stevenson and Sims letters to William Jordan, why would
soldiers in the middle of a dangerous battle urge Jordan to rejoin his regiment?
Why do you think Jordan decided to rejoin his regiment? List as many possible
reasons as you can think of.
6. Look at the story of the Northern and Southern soldiers on picket duty at
Vicksburg. What do their conversations suggest about the nature of the
American Civil War?
7. What details about soldiers’ experiences in battle do you learn from these
accounts?
8. Based on these letters, write a brief one-page essay on “The Everyday Life of
a Civil War Soldier.”
