Biology 12 :Reproduction Internet Assignment
Due Date:
This assignment will be handed in and marked. You are responsible for the some of the material researched on assessments
of this unit.
NO CUTTING AND PASTING
1) Find the following website and answer the questions that follow. Click on the fetal alcohol syndrome link from this site.

a)
b)
c)
d)
Describe fetal alcohol syndrome.
How does alcohol affect the babies development?
List three or four symptoms
Why do authorities suggest women completely avoid alcohol while they are pregnant or considering getting
pregnant?
2) Research and record the meaning of the following terms; cleavage, blastula, gastrula, germ layers and neural
development. Use the following website (or any others) to determine at what point during development each of the
researched terms occurs and describe what the fetus looks like at each point.

3) a)Use the following website to research what each of the following is, looks like, and does for the embryo; yolk, allantois,
amnion, chorion.

b) What is the purpose of the placenta and umbilical cord?
4) Complete a search to determine what each of the following is;
amniocentesis
ultrasound
fetoscopy
Try to include pictures if you can.
5) Research one of the following reproductive procedures and outline what it is, when it is used and any ethical issues
associated with it.
In-vitro fertilization
Intra-uterine insemination
Tubal reversals/ Vasectomy reversals
Sperm banks
cryopreservation of sperm, oocytes, embryos
Fertility drugs
Embryo transfer,

Biology 12 :Reproduction Internet Assignment - Answers
1) Find the following website and answer the questions that follow. Click on the fetal alcohol syndrome link from this site.
http://www.glencoe.com/sec/science/biology/bls/chapter18/weblinks.shtml
a) Describe fetal alcohol syndrome: a pattern of mental and physical defects which develop in some unborn babies
when the mother drinks too much alcohol during pregnancy.
b) How does alcohol affect the babies development? Seriously handicapped, smaller body size, low birth weight
c) List three or four symptoms: growth deficiencies, skeletal deformities, facial abnormalities, organ deformities,
and central nervous system handicaps.
d) Why do authorities suggest women completely avoid alcohol while they are pregnant or considering getting
pregnant? No one knows what a safe amount of alcohol is during pregnancy.
2) Research and record the meaning of the following terms; cleavage, blastula, gastrula, germ layers and neural
development. Use the following website (or any others) to determine at what point during development each of the
researched terms occurs and describe what the fetus looks like at each point.
http://www.visembryo.com/baby/index.html
Cleavage: a series of mitotic cell divisions that occur in the blastula stage of embryo development
Blastula: a term used for the ball of cells in early embryonic development.
Gastrula: the term used to describe the embryo after gastrulation has occurred and there are three layers of cells
Germ layers: the three layers that emerge after gastrulation: endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm
Neural development: begins in the embryo with the formation of the neural tube, first system to develop
3) a)Use the following website to research what each of the following is, looks like, and does for the embryo; yolk, allantois,
amnion, chorion.
http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/E/ExtraembryonicMembranes.html
yolk: sole source of food until hatching. A mixture of protein and lipoprotein
allantois: stores metabolic wastes of embryo and participates in gas exchange as it grows larger.
amnion: protects the embryo in a sac filled with amniotic fluid
chorion: lines the inner surface of a shell and participates in the exchange of gases
b) What is the purpose of the placenta and umbilical cord? They connect the embryo to the mother’s uterus in an
elaborate and efficient way. The blood supply of the placenta is continuous with that of the fetus and exchange of
materials occurs between the fetus and mother through the placenta and umbilical cord.
4) Complete a search to determine what each of the following is;
Amniocentesis: withdrawal of amniotic fluid from mother, cells used to produce karyotype, show genetic abnormalities
Ultrasound: medical imagery technique used to view the baby in the uterus and identify any abnormalities
Fetoscopy: is a procedure which is performed to allow your health care provider to see your baby while it is still
in your uterus with the aid of a thin flexible instrument called a fetoscope, The fetoscope is inserted into the
uterus through a thin incision in the stomach wall. This is all carried out with the aid of an ultrasound
5) Research one of the following reproductive procedures and outline what it is, when it is used and any ethical issues
associated with it.
In-vitro fertilization
Fertility drugs
Intra-uterine insemination
Embryo transfer,
Tubal reversals/ Vasectomy reversals
Egg donor and surrogacy
