Plant Vocabulary
 reproduce: to make more plants of the same kind.
 Scientists classify plants into two main groups.
 monocot seed: this type of seed has only one part.
 A pine tree is a conifer because it makes seeds inside a cone.
 dicot seed: this type of seed breaks into two parts.
 spore: A tiny cell on a fern or moss plant that grows into a new plant.
 sepal: The part of the flower that protects the flower bud.
 stamen: the male part of the flower.
 pollen is found on the anther of the stamen.
 pistil: the female part of the flower.
 pollination: the movement of pollen from the anther to the stigma.
 ovules: the part of the ovary that contains the eggs.
 ovary: the bottom part of the pistil that contains the ovules.
 fertilization: the combining of the egg and sperm.
 embryo: the part inside the seed that grows into the new plant.
 dormant: The resting stage of a plant.
Plant Notes
-The pistil, or female part of the flower, is made up of the stigma, style, ovary,
and ovules.
-The stamen, or male part of the flower is made up of the anther and filament
-Not all plants contain four parts. The corn and cottonwood plant are examples
of plants lacking the four main parts.
-The seeds of a pine tree are located in the pine cone.
-Since ferns and mosses don’t make seeds to reproduce, they use spores.
-The spores on a moss are located on the tip of the stalk.
-The spores on a fern are located under the leaves.
The major characteristic of flowering plants is their colorful petals.
Necessary things a dormant seed needs to grow.
-Water, the right temperature, oxygen, soil, sunlight
-Pollination: the movement of pollen from the anther of one flower to the stigma
of another flower. Small animals, insects, and wind help carry the pollen from
flower to flower.
-Fertilization: The pollen which contains sperm goes to the stigma. A tube forms
down to the ovary to the ovules where the eggs are located. Fertilization occurs
when the sperm combines with the egg.
