French and Indian war
The war was part of a large conflict between great Britain and France known as the
seven years war. The French and Indian war was from 1754~1763 the war between the 2
strongest empire at the time. While fighting both sides also tried to befriend the native
Americans (Indians). In the beginning of the war Britain lost but in 1751, war began to give
favor to Britain.
In Europe Spanish King Charles III offered to help his cousin French King Louis XV.
It was announced that Spanish would declare war on Britain if the war didn’t end before
May 1st 1762. This act was intended to pressure Britain to a peaceful ending of the war.
Instead of ending the war, on January the 4th 1762 Britain declared war on Spain. With
Britain strength at sea and Spanish inefficiency, Britain won the war. The war ended with
the treaty of Paris in 1763 it secured Britain with an enormous amounts of territory (e.g.
French territory in America, Florida, Caribbean island, Philippines) Although it was a great
victory and win, trouble will soon come as Britain wants the colonies to pay for the
expensive war.
No taxation without representation
In 1763 people started to use the slogan, “no taxation without representation!”
they used it because many colonies thought the lack of direct representation in the British
parliament denied their rights as Englishmen. An example of what the colonies didn’t like
but had no power or rights to change it was, the high tax the colonies had to pay for
imported goods like sugar, legal documents, tea...etc. The colonies thought the British had
no right to tax them without a representative of their own in the parliament. This was one
of the acts that made the Americans go against the British and later on go into war.
Boston tea party
This was an action of protest by American colonists against British government. On
December 16th 1773, the sons of liberty disguised as Indians went, late at night, to the
Boston harbor, the work lasted all night. The sons of liberty had destroyed 90,000 pounds
(40,800 kg, 342 tea chests) of tea by dumping it into
fter that, tea still
washed up the shores of Boston. All the tea was damaged, the tea had belonged to the
British East Indian Company. The parliament got upset, the tea had caused a crisis, who
was going to pay for all that tea??!!
The Intolerable acts
The Intolerable acts were a series of unacceptable, outrageous laws passed that
went against the 13 colonies. A number of acts were directly made in response to the
Boston tea Party.
~The Boston Party Act
A law was passed that the Boston Port will be closed until, all destroyed tea were
paid back and the King was satisfied that order has been restored. Colonist thought it was
unfair that the law punished all of Boston instead of the individuals who destroyed the tea.
~The Quartering act
The Quartering act applied to all the colonies. The law was, colonies had to house
British troops in their homes and/or buildings. It was made
to house British troops more efficiently since it was hard to
find space and housing for such a large number of soldiers.
Some source claim its only a myth that troops could
stay in occupied private homes. It was thought that troops
could only stay in unoccupied buildings.
Boston massacre
This was an incident involving 5 deaths. Troops fired
muskets after being attacked by a rioting crowd. The crowd
was protesting and some people in the crowds started to yell
“fire” as a joke, which led to troops firing.
The 1st continental congress
In 1774 colonies held the 1st continental congress, all but representatives from
Georgia joined to discuss their response to the British, Intolerable acts in philadelphia.
During the congress they discussed their relationship with Britain, their rights with the
British government...etc. They didn't want it to sound like they wanted seek independence
from Britain, because they still needed support, help. In the end the representatives
agreed to boycott British goods and to meet again in May 1775 if the british didn't change
their policies.
The Kind of England replied by deciding to punish and weaken the colonies. They
denied colonies to access the NorthAtlantic fishing area. Not long after the colonies and
England went into war against each other.
The Revolutionary War
The war is also called the American War of Independence began in 1775. The war
was a war between Britain and The 13 colonies, but as the war went on other country
jointed, it ended in a global war between a number of European great powers. The first
shots of the war were fired in Massachusetts. News of the fighting speared quickly, other
places soon found out and was getting ready to fight. Some got reinforcements while
others recruited and trained.
The famous battle of Bunker Hill, June 1775 was won by the British (the Americans
had wanted the hill for its commanding view of Boston.) Lots of battles were fought after
that. Britain won war after war so the second continental congress took place. The
declared they were independent from Britain by
issuing the Declaration of independence. Since
they had announced they were independent they
had to fight to keep it. George Washington led
his men across the icy Delaware River on
Christmas night, and had won a victory. Even
with a stunning victory many battles after that
were won by the British.
America was losing but the French who
were always willing to fight against Great Britain
agreed to help. The one of the last battle was
won by American General George Washington.
They ended it with the Treaty of Paris, where
America and France negotiated the terms of a
peace treaty. America had won and gained
independence.
