TEMA: The Preterite
• Type of past tense that tells that an event happened AND was completed
• Has a beginning or end
• Use to say that something interrupted an on-going action
• Use hubo, ‘there was’, to say that an event happened
Ex. Hubo un terremoto = there was an earthquake

• ver doesn’t have any accents
• No stem-changing verbs!
• Verbs that end in -car, -gar and -zar have irregular yo forms
-car --> qué
buscar --> yo busqué = I looked
-gar --> gué
pagar --> yo pagué = I paid
-zar --> cé
almorzar --> yo almorcé = I ate lunch
• The following cue words tell you to use the preterite:
• Ayer = yesterday
• Anoche = last night
• La semana pasada = last week
• El mes pasado = last month
• El año pasado = last year
• Hace + unit of time + que + verb = unit of time ago ...
