Upper Limb Grouping
Group 1- Muscles that arise from the
shoulder girdle and cross the shoulder
joint to insert into the humerus.
 Group 2- Enclose the humerus and
insert on the forearm bones.
 Group 3- Muscles in the forearm, which
insert on the hand bones and caused
their movement

Pectoralis Major
Origin:
Sternum, clavicle, and first to sixth
ribs
Insertion:
Proximal humerus
Function:
Flexion of the humerus, internal
rotation, and adduction of the arm
Latissimus Dorsi
Origins:
Lower spine and iliac crest
Insertion:
Proximal humerus
Function:
Adducts, extends, and internally
rotates the arm at the shoulder
Deltoid
Origin:
Scapular spine and clavicle
Insertion:
Humerus (deltoid tuberosity)
Function:
Shoulder abduction, flexion and
extension
Biceps Brachii
Origin:
Scapula
Insertion:
Proximal Radius
Function:
Flexion of forearm at the shoulder
and supinates forearm
Brachialis
Origin:
Distal humerus
Insertion: Proximal ulna
Function:
Flexion of the forearm at the elbow
Brachioradialis
Origin:
Humerus
Insertion:
Distal radius
Function:
Assists with the flexion of the forearm
at the elbow (fairly weak muscle)
Triceps Brachii
Origin:
Shoulder girdle and proximal humerus
Insertion: Olecranon process of the ulna
Function: Extension, adduction, and
extension of the arm at the shoulder
Flexor Carpi Radialis
Origin:
Distal humerus
Insertion: Second and third metacarpals
Function:
Flexion of the wrist
Flexor Carpi Ulnaris
Origin:
Distal humerus and posterior ulna
Insertion:
Carpals of wrist and fifth metacarpal
Function:
Flexion and adduction of the wrist and
assists with the flexion of the forearm
Flexor Digitorum Superficialis
Origin:
Distal humerus, ulna, and radius
Insertion:
Middle phalanges of second to fifth
fingers
Function:
Flexion of the wrists and digits
Extensor Carpi Radialis
Origin:
Humerus
Insertion: Bae of the second and third
metacarpals
Function:
Extension of the wrist
Extensor Digitorum
Origin:
Distal humerus
Insertion:
Distal phalanges of the second to
fifth finger
Function:
Extension of the fingers
