In the book Midsummer Night’s Dream
his role was as Duke of Athens ( or king,
alternatively)
 His role in this story made his myth seem
believable
 The author used mythological people to
convey to reader’s a deeper sense of
the characters and theme

Theseus was known as a symbol of stability
and power.
 His father Aegeus left behind a sword and
sandals for his son underneath a boulder
 When he was a appropriate age he
wrapped both arms around bolder and
tossed it into the forest
 He went on a journey to meet his father ,
and along the way not realizing he was
considered a hero

The author’s purpose wasn’t to entertain
his audience there was a deeper reason
 He placed these characters into specific
roles due to there mythology
background
 I think Theseus was presented as Duke ,
because his background stated that he
was strong, powerful, and had the ability
to be violent if needed

“die the death , or abjure/ forever the
society of men”(1.1,65-67)
This example states the power that he has,
and seriousness to go through with his
words

“ Hippolyta , I wooded thee with my sword
And won thy love doing thee injuries…”(
I, 16-19) Theseus was capable of being
violent if needed.
Theseus was a symbol to start of the
reasoning of the different love triangles. In
my opinion his power was used to set up
the rising action. Although he wasn’t
presented in climax nor rising action. He
made a choice to kill Hermia if she didn’t
marry Demetrius , but his power made it
possible to follow through with his words.
 When you know the background of
characters helps with the understanding.
The use of mythology was just PERFECT!
