Organ Systems and Homeostasis
Tissues
• Tissues are a group of cells that perform the
same function
– Muscle tissue can contract, or shorten
– Nervous tissue carry electrical messages back and
forth from the brain
– Connective tissue provides support and connects
parts
– Epithelial tissue protects delicate tissues beneath
it (i.e. skin)
Organ Systems
• A group of organs that work together to perform a major function

Integumentary system – skin, hair, nails
Skeletal system – all bones
Muscular System – all muscles
Circulatory system – carries nutrients
Respiratory system – takes in oxygen, releases carbon dioxide
Digestive system – breaks down food so the body can use it
Excretory system – gets rid of waste produced by the digestive system
Immune system – creates antibodies that fight infection
Reproductive system – produce reproductive cells
Nervous system – carries messages to and from brain
Endocrine system – glands produce chemicals (hormones) the body
needs to function
Homeostasis
• The maintaining of a body’s internal
environment to stay the same regardless of
the external environment
